8 Poems From the Red Book (with translations)

tentada
karo y color
de un rojo irreal
en escena cuatro horas de terror
hasta que suceda
va a veinticuatro por siete

sacúdela
olla estancada
los rostros sobre el monte
(evocan/inspiran repetición de esclavitud)
tanques de ácido
a torrentes
sobre esa faz

Asumí que era local.
Y así me moví/mudé.
Oí que todos se visten de fama.
Los enfermizos
sumisos,
precaución adicional.
Reseñas mixtas.
Ha de ser algo en mi andar.

al saberla
expresar
su alegría se hace
vacío parcial
si debes saber
no hay intención
de dañar lo potencial
aún, el hábito viejo
es tu interés
sin nada por
desaprender.
El deseo halló refugio
y sin él yo quedaré.

Tras temor
tensión hacia lo igual
lo aprendido, eligió lo familiar
sin misterio al detalle
antes
de buscar lo que no está,
verdad

Validada
rumbo al ínterin
despertando a estados medios
temor desde ratones a temblores
realizada
todo siempre pareciendo
como sentada, en sueño
movimientos temblorosos
que aún no han sucedido
somnolencias de colores
siempre es
una salida
toma tiempo
en reflexión
tu nacimiento
es mañana
y te puedes
aferrar
a tu mente

Cuéntame de la visión
algo en qué creer
con sincera honesta intención
y el lenguaje equiparable
ejemplifica
conserva ojos, manos.
dientes
pero deja otros a tu gusto en
tu noción de la justicia
hombre resplandeciente
que no ve
forjadas largas las cadenas
reemplazadas
por distancia de verdad
un hombre andariego
rumbo al desierto
sin encontrarse
los dos en cuerpo igual

en caso
de hallar
solución sencilla
favor de compartir.
tener presente
estamos siempre
a dar razón para hacer mal.
siempre habrá algún explotado
así que al trepar, recuerda
sobre quienes pisas.
Las bocas hacen buen peldaño.

_______
Gekweld
door karo en kleur
een onwerkelijke rode
zoals bij een eeuwige horror film
maar tot op dat moment
duurt het, dag in, dag uit

meng het al
stagnerende
gezichten in de berg
(inspireer een slavernijvolle herhaling)
met vaten vol gif
stromend
naar beneden

alleen hier dacht ik dat het was
dus vertrok ik
luisterend naar de neppe bekenden
de zieken
onderdrukt
met voorzorg, zo bewust
wisselende meningen
als ik overal voorbij loop
eens geleerd
om uit te drukken
plezier verandert
hun leegheid blijft
je moet weten
zo onbedoeld
het beschadigen van het overgebleven
dan nog, onthoud
de macht der gewoonte
er is niets
af te leren
lust vond een schuilplaats
maar ik heb er geen

na angst
wil je niet meer terug
eens geleerd, kies het bekende
laat mysteries los
voordat
je zoekt naar de ongeziene
woorden

vol waarheid
tot een pauze vol rust
wakker worden tussen
angst, voor muizen en orkanen
realiseer
het is alleen zoals het lijkt
alsof ik zit en droom
alles om mij heen beweegt
maar maak ik het wel mee
ik droom in echte kleuren
als dan het is
een uitweg
neem je tijd
en blik terug
morgen
ben je geboren
en dan
houd je je vast
aan je geest

Vertel mij je visie
iets wat ik kan geloven
met een eerlijke intentie
en zo ook woorden
toe te lichten
behoud je ogen, handen
tanden
maar verwijderen anderen volgens jouw
waarheidsoordeel
een schijnende man
zonder zicht
met een lengte van kettingen
vervangen
door werkelijke afstand
een rondzwervende man
verlaten en gebonden
nooit ontmoetende
maar in hetzelfde lichaam

Als jij
een simpele oplossing
vindt
deel het
houd in gedachte

Why Crosswalks should have their own Intersection

A driver may spend little over a half their time turning while racing on a closed dirt track. On a typical drive, much less of the time is spent in a turn.

A Seattle study looked through Harborview Hospital records. Out of 255 cases of pedestrian injury, 41% involved a turning vehicle. (1)

straightaway injuries 48%
left turn injuries 32%
right turn injuries 19%

total turn injuries ~ 41%

How the proportions of this sample scale to the World Heath Organization globally estimated 270,000 pedestrian deaths is unknown. (2) Still, it is safe to say there is more danger for a pedestrian to be near a turning car. So why are crosswalks placed where turning cars are sure to be?

The risks of street corner crossings

When driving, a lot of information you get has direct effect on your actions. Missing a signal can cause an accident. On a straight path, there is less information to consider and where you will be in five seconds can be predicted. The most relevant visual information happens to be in the direction you are going. When turning, you have to consider traffic from several directions at once.

These graphics have no data behind them but are a rough guess at the areas around a driver that need to be considered. Turning left usually requires avoiding traffic from two opposing lanes as well as making sure there is space ahead. While number of left turns taken and number of right turns taken could be assumed to be almost equal, this may help explain why left turns were involved in a higher number of the accidents in the Harborview sample.

What city planners can do

Areas where people of different transport types in mixed traffic are all provided multiple options creates uncertainty for others. Predictability is the key to safety in traffic.

Start putting crosswalks in the middle of the block. Use bumpouts in parking areas. These extensions of the sidewalk clarify a pedestrian's intention to cross the street by increasing visibility and creating an area where only people crossing would go. Be careful they do not intersect bike lanes, this creates a whole new set of issues.

My favorite idea is the use of raised crosswalks. Combining the functionality of a speed bump and cross walk will ensure drivers slow down even if they do not see a person going to cross the street, a good habit that is instead built into the design. Rumble strips can be used in a similar way.

At intersections with traffic lights, use all walks when possible. One of the benefits of this suggestion is the cost of reprogramming existing street lights and putting up an all walk sign is relatively low. This is especially important on streets where most of the traffic is turning, specifically T-intersections.

What you can do

When walking

Be aware. Check for cars turning behind you. Make your intentions clear. What could your placement on the sidewalk and where you are looking would mean to someone driving by? Try only standing by crosswalks if you are going to use them, this will help reduce confusion for drivers overall.

Eye contact and hand gestures always clarify.

Remember parked cars, drunken crowds, trees, and other features could prevent drivers from seeing you at all or make your actions seem less predictable.

Use city signal buttons when they are available. Some of these buttons flash lights or make noises that can let drivers know you are there. Luckily, you probably don't need technology to make noise! Being loud while alone will slow down cars but also slow the rate of how often strangers choose to say hi. If you start shouting on a street corner, at least I'll know what your intentions are.

If you are unfamiliar with a crossing take extra care. Ignoring the red hand may not always be dangerous, but on streets with green arrowed turns for cars it is.

When possible, wait for a car with a reasonable stopping distance or a clearing in traffic.

If you are walking at night, carry a light. If you're concerned about looking overly concerned, you could only turn it on when cars need to know you are there.

When driving or cycling
Much of safe driving is in the states' driver guides, so I will try to only repeat some.

Prepare to reduce speed at crosswalks and unmarked intersections, signal, and remember the limits of being on foot.

Stopping at both marked and unmarked crosswalks is both the most legal thing to do and encourages people walking to cross well. Its a lot harder to spot a jay walker, but it can often be easier to cross in the middle of the road.

Buses carry surprises. Its discouraged to cross in front of the bus because its harder for passing cars to see, but it can still happen.

miscellaneous

not sure about these ones
- In an unmarked intersection when a pedestrian is crossing the street along side you, travel at a similar pace while in the intersection. This will protect them from opposing traffic that may not see them behind your car.
- Sometimes I will cross the street to stop traffic and give a waiting car a chance to turn. I don't know what this helps, maybe saves the long waiting person some time. The point is we're all on the street together and can make adjustments when we can.
-Outside sound can be a used as a cue, especially when your windows are down.
Added bonus- autonomous cars will have less to consider. (they don't mind)
